The leg extension has been successfully completed. The metals from the thighs or lower legs were removed in the clinic. Now many patients are longing for their usual sporting activities. But what is permitted from a medical perspective and where is caution and patience required? This is what the Freiburg leg lengthening specialist Dr. med. A. Becker.
“After the metal has been removed, patients can already walk well. However, the body needs some time to remodel the bony structures. This is why forearm crutches are necessary for about 2 weeks when running. Impulse loads such as jumping, etc. are dangerous in the initial period (4 to… 6 weeks) after metal removal.”
This is strictly forbidden for 4-6 weeks after metal removal
- Jumping
- Jump down stairs
- Jumping down small walls
- Jump on the trampoline
- Kitesurfing
- Play soccer
- Other sports with a high directional load
Sporty development program after leg lengthening/metal removal
In this way, leg lengthening patients can achieve a sporting foundation without pain, whether with strength training (upper body, abdominal muscles, gluteal muscles, arm muscles), by running/walking or by training on the bike.
- The athletic development after leg lengthening is best carried out according to the classic pattern: slow, gradually increasing training.
- All maximally stressful sports units without a previously achieved basis are accompanied by pain.
- Low level training, 4 to 7 days per week, is ideal.
- If the body does not give any negative feedback (pain), a moderate increase is possible approximately every 1-2 weeks.
